The island of Shikoku in Japan has a huge variety of flowers that bloom year round. Perhaps the most dramatic is the scented wisteria that blossoms in early spring. Every park, temple and shrine has its wisteria bower, visited by contented bumblebees that buzz about harmlessly. We like to stop and eat lunch at the tables under the flowers.
There are twelve castles in Japan with main towers dating back to the Edo period, and of these, four are in Shikoku – Marugame, Matsuyama, Uwajima and Kōchi. There are also reconstructed castles and historic battle sites that repay exploration.
